Born in America to immigrant parents, my early years were deeply rooted in Asian culture. But as I grew up, I quickly realized to blend in was to be like others. I began rejecting aspects of my identity that defined me in an effort to be more “American.” It wasn’t until I entered 8th grade that I found people who mirrored me, in looks and experiences. Being with them led me to realize that I didn’t have to let go of my Asian heritage, that I could be proud to be different. I made this piece to represent my growth and to illustrate that wherever I am, my cultural roots will forever be a part of myself I proudly hold onto.
