Hold On
Born in America to immigrant parents, my early years were deeply rooted in Asian culture. But as I grew up, I quickly realized to blend in was to be like others. I began rejecting aspects of my identity that defined me in an effort to be more “American.” It wasn’t until I entered 8th grade that I found people who mirrored me, in looks and experiences. Being with them led me to realize that I didn’t have to let go of my Asian heritage, that I could be proud to be different. I made this piece to represent my growth and to illustrate that wherever I am, my cultural roots will forever be a part of myself I proudly hold onto.

Bloom
Tangerines were my favorite childhood fruit. But when I was younger, I couldn’t figure out how to peel them, so I always asked my grandma to help. I watched as she happily took it and removed the peel in just a few quick motions. I use oil paints to illustrate the diverse textures and details that revealed themselves as the fruit unfurled like a flower. Painting this brought me back to a distant memory; one of the excitement of biting into a juicy tangerine slice and laughing at the kitchen table with my grandma.

kitchen Corner
Beauty isn’t just found in the shiny and new. Sometimes, it’s hidden. Under dust and wear, in a place as mundane as the corner of your kitchen.

Today
Today is a collection of the past. I am everything I’ve ever seen, heard, felt, and experienced.

2050
Experts have said year 2050 can be considered a turning point for global warming. But will it be one of hope, where we can celebrate coming together to save our planet, or one of further chaos and destruction, when it may finally be too late? In a time where power favors wealth over life, it isn’t difficult to imagine which it will be. But time favors no one, and the clock is ticking.
